Marking Sporting History with Prestwick Golf Club

We’re proud that a number of historic sports clubs choose Wentworth Pewter for our handcrafted trophies, plates and other gifts for sporting events and presentations. The prestigious Prestwick Golf Club, in Scotland, is one such club for whom we have worked on a variety of commissions that you’ll find at their ceremonies and in their Pro Shop. 

The birthplace of the Open 

Prestwick Golf Club is a place that’s steeped in sporting history. Designed by Tom Morris in 1851, the club is one of the top 100 golf courses in the world. The club was born when golf was in its infancy and is also the birthplace of the renowned Open Championship. 

The Open Championship often referred to as the British Open, is one of the keynote golf tournaments of the international calendar, conducted by The R&A, the sports governing body across the world. It is one of the four major championships in professional golf and the oldest of the four.

Our Open Championship claret jug

With the renowned Open Championship in mind, one of the most exciting and unique special commissions on which we’ve worked for Prestwick has to be the claret jug. The piece is a version of the original Open Championship jug. Adorned with intricately engraved illustrations and the names of previous champions, the jug is a small and significant slice of golf history. 

Prestwick special commissions 

It is a great pleasure to work on a variety of other handcrafted items for the historic club. In the past, we’ve worked on pieces, such as pewter ball makers, hip flasks, tankards, and, on occasion, the Scottish whisky cup or quaich. These can all be engraved with a personalised message.

When guests and members play a round at Prestwick Golf Course, they can drink their post-game beer out of silver tankards. Should they wish to take a memento home with them, they can purchase replica Pewter Pint Tankards on the club site too. The beautifully spun Georgian shaped pieces come complete with an official hallmark.
